Central Locking
Overview
The NP0044 ELS compression latch range is engineered to provide a compact, low-power, self-contained electronic locking solution. Unlike more traditional actuator-driven central locking mechanisms, its design utilises solenoid-based electromagnetic hold technology to maintain secure locking performance when not electrically energised.
This system is intended to operate as either a self-contained closed-circuit configuration or as part of a wider integrated ELS central locking ecosystem to provide reliable remote locking functionality, while maintaining a default secure locked state when inactive. The time-delayed auto re-locking feature is factory configured and forms part of the latch’s built-in security logic.
Understanding ELS / CL Actuation for Compression Latches
Selectlok’s ELS NP0044 full-length push-button compression latches are designed to operate within an Electronic Locking Solution (ELS) ecosystem. This may be configured as either a self-contained (closed circuit) central locking system or as part of a broader integrated ELS architecture.
The actuation method used by these latches differs from that of typical vehicle OEM central locking systems, or from whale tail and folding T-handle mechanisms commonly fitted with attached central locking kits and used in aftermarket canopy and service body installations.
Traditional central locking systems are generally designed to operate using 12V or 24V actuator units that are mechanically attached to the handle locking pawl. When an electrical pulse is received, the actuator moves a shaft, worm gear and/or cam to lock or unlock the pawl mechanism. In these systems, the handle typically remains in that state until a reverse electrical signal is applied.
The NP0044 compression latch range includes an integrated lock status indicator light (green/red) and a factory preset time-delayed auto-relocking security feature.
If the latch is electronically unlocked but not physically opened within the preset time-delay period, the system will automatically re-lock.
The latch can be unlocked again by either:
- Pressing the remote control button, or
- Using the manual key override
The time-delay function is factory set and is not user adjustable.
Due to the latch’s compact internal design and inherent space limitations, ELS compression latches cannot operate in the same mechanical manner as traditional external actuator-based central locking units.
Instead, the system relies on receiving an electrical signal when the lock/unlock button on the remote fob is pressed.
Power may be supplied through either:
- 4 x AA batteries (1.5V each) / 6V DC input, or
- An external 12V supply that is stepped down to a compatible 6V output via the Control Box Module.
When the signal is received, power energises the integrated solenoid within the latch. The solenoid functions as an electromagnetic hold mechanism that retains the locking pin in the unlocked position.
Once the electrical signal ceases and the stored charge dissipates, the solenoid releases, allowing the locking mechanism to automatically return to its default locked state.
Important Installation and Configuration Notes
While it may be technically possible to modify certain parameters of the system through advanced wiring configurations, Selectlok strongly discourages attempting to alter the time-delay or actuation characteristics without appropriate technical expertise.
Selectlok does not provide guidance on methods to bypass or modify these features. Attempting to do so may void warranty coverage.
For installation or configuration advice, Selectlok recommends consulting a qualified automotive electrical specialist for all system integration queries.
